Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Get the best rental home value:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal SC. To find the largest rental for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Property management companies sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose a group leader, choose your dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Cozy Ocean Lakes home w\/Golf cart! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before reserving the home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Know before you go:
- Take a copy of the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let crooks spoil your trip.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be respectful. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
