- Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties.
- Some property managers offer rate reductions for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
- Property managers usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.

- Take a copy of the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few problems.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To make certain damages aren't linked to your visit, inspect for any problem areas during check in. Call the host right away to relay any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
